Therapeutic Sandplay

Sandplay is a non-verbal form of therapy that is quite often used as a tool within Play Therapy or alongside verbal therapy, but can also be offered as a therapy approach in its own right. My work is following the work founded by Dora Kalff, which a Jungian based approach. This provides a 'free and protected space', engaging both the conscious and unconscious processes. Sandplay is suitable for both children and adults, and is a very accessible form of expression.

During a Sandplay session you will have access to a sand tray (a wooden tray/box with a blue bottom) and a selection of symbols/miniature figures.

The miniature figures (collection) include representations of all parts of life and fantasy. Building materials such as clay or plasticine are also available so that you can make items that are unique when needed. Water can also be added to make it easier for shaping and forming the sand.

You will be given the time (sessions usually last an hour), space and the freedom to create whatever you want within the sand. You may choose to place/build/construct, create a picture/image or tell a story. You can do this complete silence or you can talk if you wish. We may look at the tray together once you feel it is completed and you may then wish to talk about what you have done, or what it feels like to you.

How much you wish to talk or share is your choice, as the process is led by you. I will try not to interpret or make comment about what you have done, but will be there to observe, listen and to hold your process. I will be beside you throughout your journey and there to support and maintain a safe space for you to create, reflect and share as and when appropriate.

During your session, I may make some notes, to track where symbols are being placed, and a picture maybe taken of your tray at the end. This is so that I can revisit it at a later point. We may also choose to look back at your tray together after a number of trays have been completed (Sandplay process).
